London-based producer Ryan Lee West, better known as Rival Consoles, has long stood out for his uncanny ability to make synthesisers feel alive. His music breathes, pulses and shifts with an organic warmth that has earned him a devoted global following. After a sold-out appearance at Dark Mofo and an extensive world tour, West now returns to Australia with his acclaimed audiovisual project Landscape from Memory, including a highly anticipated stop in Sydney.
A Cinematic Audiovisual Experience
Landscape from Memory is an evolving long-form performance that blends West’s signature sound design with live visuals by digital artist Sky Ainsbury. Together, they transform the concert space into a euphoric, cinematic environment where ambient textures, shoegaze-inspired haze, minimal techno rhythms and widescreen atmospheres merge into a single narrative arc. Many of the pieces performed are reworked or premiered exclusively for the live show, making each performance a unique experience.
Sydney’s City Recital Hall, known for its pristine acoustics, will host the duo, promising an especially immersive rendition of the project.
Eighteen Years of Sonic Evolution
Over nearly two decades, Rival Consoles has become one of the UK’s most influential electronic artists. Born in Leicester, West began as a guitarist before shifting toward electronic production and studying music technology at De Montfort University. He debuted on Erased Tapes in 2007 and has remained with the label ever since, releasing a steady stream of albums and EPs that explore the emotional and textural possibilities of analogue synthesis.
His sound has been described by Pitchfork as “high-brow, avant-garde electronic music in the vein of Jon Hopkins and Nils Frahm” a fitting summary of his meticulous approach to tone, texture and dynamics.
Beyond his solo work, West has remixed artists such as Jon Hopkins, Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Cooper, Noisia and Sasha, and has composed for contemporary dance and film. His credits include the score for Alexander Whitley’s Overflow and music for the Black Mirror episode Striking Vipers.
His latest album, Landscape from Memory, released in 2025, marks a new chapter in his ongoing pursuit of sonic refinement.
