"Unlike a regular artist album project, this CD features a series of reinterpretions of Paul's production work, rather than original versions. Being something that has been in the planning stage for over a year, Paul approached several producers from around the world, some of whom he has a friendship with, and others whom he respects musically, and offered them the chance to pick a track from his extensive back catalogue with a view to reinterpreting it for the album.

The result is a wondeful remix album that not only gives a new touch to some of Paul Kalkbrenner's greatest tracks, but also showcases some of the best talent the underground scene has to offer today, with many of Germany's finest producers featured in addition to the excellent Dutch and French techno wizards Joris Voorn and Agoria, rounding off a list of names that is exceptionally varied both in terms of musicality and experience."

"Black Sessions are performances of the live music broadcast on the French Radio station France Inter. These are recorded in front of a live audience and feature on a C'est Lenoir show. A French Radio DJ's name is Bernard Lenoir ("lenoir'' means "black" in english).

The first performance was in 1992 and since then many French and international artists have performed Black Sessions."

"The job title of DJ may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Erlend Øye. The singer, songwriter and indie pop star behind Kings Of Convenience has only owned a set of turntables for a few months, but despite all this, Erlend Øye the DJ is anything but a joke. With his compilation for the latest installment of the DJ-Kicks series, the Berlin-residing Norwegian not only redefines the DJ mix, but unleashes a monster set of leftfield party tunes as well.

In a certain way, Øye brings to mind DJ-Kicks alums like Kruder & Dorfmeister, however, where they enriched their mixes in the studio using dub effects, keyboard overlays and distortions, Erlend Øye takes to the microphone. Having re-sung nine songs for this mix, Erlend deftly blurs the line between a DJ mix and a full on artist album. Three of these are so far unreleased compositions of his own and the other six are cover versions of tunes by Elvis, Bananarama, Pet Shop Boys and others.

Erlend’s selection for his DJ-Kicks draws from the best of both the dance and rock worlds. NYC dance rockers The Rapture are here, as are French house heads Phoenix, Japanese quirk-rock master Cornelius and electronica stars Royksopp. While this type of eclecticism is a constant in the DJ-Kicks series, few have left as distinctive a mark on their mixes as Erlend Øye. "

"I have been intrigued by the low pitch sound ever since I was a little child, and started playing the bass. However, hearing a techno track one day on the radio by chance made me into a club DJ. I started making music around the same time with my friend, and in 1994 I was playing live shows and organizing genre-less music events. In 1996 I released a 12" from a Japanese independent label. I started making crazy hip-hop tracks around 1998. From 2000 and on, I have worked on my solo projects and several Japanese MCs' productions, which were released by several different Japanese independent labels. I was performing live utilizing different types of equipments (all of which I controlled) back then. My musical activities had to pause momentarily in 2003 due to intestinal damages, but in 2004 I recovered and have been making music at a greater pace than ever before. Currently, my live shows are constructed with a laptop and myself."
